Apple Tablet Will Create New Markets and Destroy Others
Nice article (link below) about the rumored Apple tablet device that is expected to launch in the coming months. Apple essentially created a whole new market when they launched the iPod and then again with the iPhone, generating billions of profits for themselves and others in the process.
I think that Apple has the same if not a bigger opportunity in the mobile computing space, where a tablet-like device could intersect with mobile broadband to disrupt many, many other device types. It could also usher in entirely new forms of entertainment.
An Apple tablet would not undermine the need for smartphones, which would continue to surge forward unabated. It also would not undermine the need for laptops with full keyboards and other design factors that make them key tools for business.
But what it would do is create a fully new space and device type that would likely wipe out a lot of single purpose devices while creating whole new categories of experiences (e.g. the portable but fully immersive e-book) in the process.
As I've posted a lot about recently, 2010 is going to be a year of incredible innovation in the mobile computing space. Will carriers and others step up and take advantage of this period to innovate beyond voice?
