More Than Half of Holiday Shoppers Will Use Social Media to Influence Their Purchasing

The 2009 Holiday Shopping season will be a tipping point in the influence of social media on purchasing behaviors as well as the emerging social commerce space.

According to new data released by eMarketer (link below), sixty percent of consumers who plan to use social media in their holiday shopping will be looking for discounts, coupons and sales. Just over one-half will research gift ideas and check out friends' and family members' wish lists.

As I've discussed before, they will find plenty of opinions from other buyers about the products and services that they are shopping for, whether the companies behind those products are listening and participating or not.

I believe that this will set the stage for some dramatic acceleration in 2010 in the participation of businesses in social media.
