All Your Status Are Belong To Us / Thanks, Twitter

On the back of this weeks announcements by Twitter including the Twitter In partnership with LinkedIn and the announcement, some cackling laughter has been heard in the background somewhere nearby the Twitter offices and witnessed on billboards across the country...

"All Your Status Are Belong To Us"

It's coming. Twitter is on track to be a primary conduit in the emerging statusphere where people and businesses are answering the question of what they are doing or thinking at any given moment and, increasingly, where they are doing/thinking it.

Don't take me wrong on the joke above, I am loving the recent wave of innovation that Twitter is doing with these partnership, API extensions, Lists, efforts to clean up spammers, etc. This is powerful work that will drive continued evolution of user behaviors and also innovation in everyone in the space (CloudProfile, Facebook, LinkedIn, and many others).

Here are my views on Twitter's strengths vs. other components of digital and social media marketing efforts for businesses and individuals:

  • Twitter is so open that it is possible to use it to listen to the real-time conversations that are unfolding on the web and leverage it to connect with people who are potential customers or partners for your business (especially with tools that make it easier than the native Twitter site).
  • Twitter's great and easy to use APIs have enabled tool developers like CloudProfile to help build business specific applications that unlock the power of Twitter and then help to draw prospects and customers into deeper, more meaningful interactions.

So it's not that Twitter is the be-all-end-all tool. It's just that it is the constantly in motion "front line" of where your business (or your individual) interests can connect with other relevant people in the world who you are not yet connected to. Backed by a powerful platform for then connecting with those people more deeply, it can be a tremendous source of ideas, leads, and fun.

And that is super valuable. Twitter, keep it up and you will continue to play a really valuable role in the overall digital and social media marketing ecosystem.
