Social Media Expected to Play Big Role in Holiday Shopping

Nice article in MarketingDaily (link below) by Sarah Mahoney about the big role that social media is expected to play during the upcoming holiday shopping season. My favorite bottom line statement:

"What's happening...is that consumers are much more engaged in talking about products and deals in the social world."

It also cites a few data points from the underlying study:

  • Facebook contributes more than 3% of all traffic to the top retail sites online.
  • As many as 25% of social network users post links to other companies, products or services.
  • One in five tweets mention a specific brand or services.

Net net, People Trust People. As I said in the Kelsey seminar last week (http://bit.ly/Ar7Ng), 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations, and only 14% trust traditional advertisements. Consumers are divorcing themselves from traditional advertising, and turning to each other as they make their buying decisions.

I couldn't be more pumped about providing businesses with tools to embrace these changes.
